How to Edit a Monitor
Watch a tutorial video here.
Editing your monitor enables you to make changes and improve your monitor rules. It helps you filter through excess information and get insights into your data.
Navigating to the Edit Monitor Page
There are two ways to start editing your monitor: from the monitors overview page and within the monitor.
From the Monitors Overview Page:
Find the monitor you'd like to edit. Click the 3 dot icon and select Edit Monitor.
From Within the Monitor:
At the top of your monitor, to the right of the search bar, click the 3 dot icon and select Edit Monitor.
Editing Strategies
Make More Specific Rules
If your monitor’s rules are too general, it may pull in some irrelevant data that matches the rules, but isn’t helpful. This monitor for Fender Guitars pulls in posts containing the word “fender.” As a result, there’s some posts in the monitor that are about fender benders or automobiles, which isn’t relevant to this Brand Monitor. To make the rules more specific you can add an exclusionary rule. Click Add Rule, then add words, hashtags, etc. that you want to exclude. Make sure to save the rule and the monitor.
Please note that updated monitors only reflect new rules moving forward. Old mentions that don’t match the new rules will remain in the monitor. You can mass delete these mentions to get rid of them. Learn more about mass deleting here.
Mark an Author as Spam
Sometimes an author creates a lot of posts that use keywords your monitor is tracking, but their posts aren’t relevant. By marking the account as spam, their posts will no longer be pulled into the monitor. To mark a post as spam, click on the 3 dots icon on the mention, then click Mark author as spam. A new rule will automatically be created to exclude this user.
The monitor will exclude posts from this author in the future, but to get rid of their mentions already in the monitor, you’ll need to mass delete them.
Use Trending Keywords or Influencers
Looking at trending keywords and influencers can tell you if your monitor is pulling in the right kind of data. If a top keyword/influencer is unrelated to your monitor, you can add a rule to exclude the word or social profile.
Once again, these changes will only be reflected in new data the monitor pulls. Existing mentions in the monitor can be mass deleted.
With these strategies, you can edit and refine your monitor for more meaningful results.
