How to Create Segments
A segment is an extension of a monitor that allows users to select a smaller portion of the data to run analytics and reports on. In short, a segment is an advanced search for a monitor.
To create a segment, open a monitor and select the segment box located near the top of the monitor. An option will appear that says + Create New Segment.
For segments, there are many different options available to shorten the range of data displayed.
First, name the segment. From there, the first option is the free form query. The free-form query is a tool that allows advanced searches using syntax. (Character limit for free form box is 20,480 characters)
Users can use the AND OR highlighted below to allow the segment to either allow other rules to be included or required along the free-form query box. For example, if the user has a rule in the free form and a rule under Keywords, the AND will require both rules to be included. If OR is selected, either rule is applicable.
A How-To is available as well with examples of how to use the free-form query box.
The next option is based on Network, Location, and Language. Networks include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Google+, Automattic, Pinterest, Reddit, Product Review, etc. Location is based solely on the Country. Segments are available for over 50 different languages.
Next, users have the option of keywords, phrases, and tags.
Keywords allow the user to add single words that must be included in the search. Keywords follow the same pattern as settings rules in the rule builder.
Phrases allow the user to add multiple strings of words within one rule. Phrases follow the same pattern as settings rules in the rule builder.
Note: When using both the keywords and phrase rules, it will look for both the phrase and keyword together. (Keywords AND Phrases)
Tags allow the user to filter messages that have manually be tagged. Users can segment based on any one or more Tags.
The following section is based on Influencers. The user can adjust the segment to only include influencers with a particular score, reach, or spread. Users can also segment based on gender.
The final option of segmenting is the Sentiment Category. Users can adjust it based on Positive, Negative, or Neutral sentiment.
Once all the changes have been made, click Save Segment. The segment will now display when selecting Segments. The user can select the new segment and see how the data changes based on the segment.
