As Facebook and Instagram have tightened their API's over the last couple of years, understanding exactly what data they do and do not give has become more and more complicated.
For your convenience, we are congregating this information into one easy list. Keep reading to understand what Facebook and Instagram do and do not release to us through their restricted API.
- What we do get:
- Posts from PUBLIC BUSINESS PAGES only.
- "First-level" comments on these posts. In other words, when an individual comments on an original post, we can pull that in. When sub-threads are started and someone comments on a comment, Facebook does not release this to us.
- Trending keywords, phrases, sentiment, and all other Nuvi Language Engine Analytics.
- What we don't get:
- Posts from private personal pages or groups.
- Location information. Putting a location rule in your Facebook rule group will prevent any FB information from flowing in.
- Handles of private users commenting on business page posts. The handles do not populate on mentions from Facebook in our system.
- Influencer information (i.e. follower counts, reshares, etc.)
- Historical Data and Previews. Preview data is a reflection of Twitter data only.
- What we do get:
- Posts by HASHTAGS only. Searching keywords or handles will not pull any information from Instagram, you can only include hashtags in your rule group for Instagram.
- Trending keywords, phrases, sentiment, and all other Nuvi Language Engine Analytics.
- What we don't get:
- Posts from private pages. The posts that are sent to us are from public pages only.
- Location information. Putting a location rule in your Instagram rule group will prevent any IG information from flowing in.
- User Handles. Searching by a specific handle will prevent any information from coming in from IG. You can only search by hashtag and handles do not appear in our system for IG mentions.
- Keyword matching. Once again, searching for specific keywords (that aren't hashtags) will not pull any data in. It can only be a hashtag.
- Historical Data and Previews. Preview data is a reflection of Twitter data only.
- Influencer information (i.e. follower counts, reshares, etc.)
- Comments of any kind.
- Domain matching. They do not allow us to search by domains.
The restrictions can seem overwhelming but there is still a lot of value to pull from these platforms despite the limitations.
